This is a unique opportunity for young men to become diplomats on an international stage. These scholarships will fund travel costs for American youth baseball players to travel to the Dominican Republic. These trips will center be unique combinations of baseball, culture, diplomacy, education and fun for these kids.
The players will learn many valuable life lessons such as how to use athletics to bridge cultural gaps. The players will come away from the experience with an increased appreciation for the United States and our quality of life, but also will see that, in spite of their relative poverty, the Dominicans are happy people.
Cody Lewis who traveled to the Dominican in summer 2008 is a great success story. Cody was an honors student in high school who played baseball and has a passion for foreign languages. Cody had never been on a plane prior to this trip and an international trip was a big step for him. He had a wonderful experience during the week and learned how to build relationships with people from another culture. Cody has gone on to the University of Virginia where he is studying Spanish and has applied for a summer internship with the State Department to travel overseas and learn additional languages.
